Meditations #1
“The pivotal moment of human consciousness: it becomes a question for itself.” -Stephen Batchelor
When we turn consciousness upon itself with quiet, placid tenacity, we slip into a plane of existence where traditional measures of time lose meaning. This reflection upon essential nothing but consciousness of our immediate existence first will strike the meditator as the lack of guilt and worry of the past, and lack of anxiety about what the future holds. The meditator is in fact connecting to the present reality. This is opposed to the contrived, false realities we normally perceive when obsessed with the past, future, or other time-constructed falsehoods. The only reality in existence is the present; anything else is a perception forced upon reality and buries reality. If a person meditates long enough they’ll realize that those forced perceptions become a burden. Quieting the mind opens it to the present. Stilling the mind frees it of burdens.
What I’d like to hear from people in response to this is how they go through the process of quieting their mind. Thanks for reading!
